The Comanche on the white man's road

West Texas Hills yearbook29 • Published In 1953 • Pages: 3-32

By: Wallace, Ernest.

Abstract
'This article, taking up where the book [1: Wallace and Hoebel, The Comanches] leaves them, attempts to trace briefly the historical development of the Comanches after they were compelled to accept life on the reservation' (p. 3n). It covers treaties, relations with Whites, especially cattlemen who leased their land, farming and stock-raising, other documents of income, education, missionary activity, and health care, and the persistence of pre-reservation personality traits. The emphasis throughout is on how the Comanche have dealt with the rapid changes in their lives. The article is based on field work, historical research and interviews with government administrators.
