By: Smith, Reed.

Abstract
This is a linguistic study of the Gullah dialect of the Carolina-Georgia coast and adjacent Sea Islands, preceded by a brief historical introduction. The linguistic material which comprises the bulk of the source is relatively superficial in coverage and deals with Gullah as a dialect, its grammar, phonology, and vocabulary. A list of common proverbs is appended at the end of this section. The work concludes with a brief study of Sea Islander songs, primarily 'spirituals', and their origins.
