By: Davis, Kenneth Penn.

Abstract
In this document Davis discusses four major factors which combined in 1828 to bring the removal of the Eastern Cherokee into open and heated debate: the publication of the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper in which issues of removal were discussed; the discovery of gold within Indian territory making Cherokee land most desirable to non-Indians; the election of Andrew Jackson as president who favored the removal; and the incorporation by the state of Georgia of Cherokee lands as counties of the state. Each of these factors is discussed in some detail in this work.
