Abstract
Perdue describes the origin and development of slavery among the Cherokee following the American Revolutionary War and up to approximately 1838. The author notes that war captives were frequently treated as slaves by the Cherokee and this article discusses their particular use in agriculture, and overall affect on Cherokee society.
