Abstract
The Amish response to modernity has not been uniform. Different affiliations of Amish in various settlements have developed a diversity of lifestyle practices. Donald B. Kraybill compares four affiliations that live side by side in the largest Amish settlement of North America in the Holmes County area of Ohio. The four major groups in this geographical setting have drawn the battle lines in different places in their struggle with modernity. Kraybill explores the relationship between the retention of youth and the use of technology and suggests that both reflect an underlying shift in consciousness among the more progressive groups (p. 53).
