Abstract
According to Lopez, Puerto Rican women have the highest rate of sterilization in the world. To test this hypothesis, the author examines the various social, cultural, individual, and historical forces that operate in conjunction with one another to guide and constrain the fertility choices of Puerto Rican women. The research presented in this dissertation traces and explores the various historical forces in Puerto Rico which have led to the high rate of sterilization among women on the island in order to understand the continuation of this phenomenon in New York City. The study concludes that the decision of Puerto Rican women to undergo sterilization is '…not voluntary, but rather conditioned by their socio-historical, economic and personal constraints' (Introductory, p. vii).
