Abstract
This is a study of Puerto Rican political behavior from 1917 to 1973. Estades' two major goals are to: (1) describe how the Puerto Rican population in New York City organizes itself politically in the process of adjusting to life in the city, and (2) discuss how the patterns of political participation developed in Puerto Rico are transmitted to their new community on the mainland. In addition the author explores new forms of political institutions developed by Puerto Ricans in the city '…including those that are based on reconnections with the Island because of participation in City Politics' (p. 1). This work contains data on the political history of Puerto Rico, socio-cultural change, migration, ethnicity, political parties and voting behavior, and government sponsored poverty programs.
