Abstract
This article, which has a Marxist orientation, presents a preliminary survey and commentary on the cultural world of Puerto Ricans in New York City, as represented in their music, drama and theater, and poetry. According to the authors '…the prominent features of the music, poetry, and drama of Puerto Ricans in the United States arise from the single event of the dismemberment of the colony, the transfer of part of its people as wage-laborers into new economic, political, and cultural circumstances, and the growth and development of the new community' (p. 149). The article contains valuable information on various forms of music in Puerto Rican culture, on theater and drama, and on the rich legacy available to Puerto Ricans in the oral traditions of the peasantry and in classical poetry.
