Abstract
This study, based upon research conducted in the 1930's, views 'a unit of southern American culture in terms of human beings who have inherited a historical situation and whose personalities are being constantly affected by the culture in which they live' (p. xiii). Insofar as the key elements of the 'historical situation' are White racism and discrimination against Blacks, the author seeks to interpret Black and White attitudes toward one another and to evaluate their effects in 'Cottonville,' Mississippi.
