Abstract
This source is a very rich cultural analysis of Black attitudes, values, and goals understood in terms of the concept of 'soul,' ghetto ideals of male and female, and according to four prevalent life styles which the author characterizes as: mainstreamers, swingers, street families, and streetcorner men. The main question which the author addresses concerns the extent to which the concept 'ghetto' encompasses shared values and a single moral community. In seeking an answer, the points of overlap and separation between Black urban society and White culture are finely drawn.
