Abstract
Traditional dances, followed by a gift distribution or potlatch, are still performed on certain crucial occasions on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Despite great changes in the content of these ceremonies, significant persistence is apparent in the types of occasions celebrated, the theatrical nature of the performances, the social solidarity expressed and the attitude of the participants. This paper considers contemporary Nootkan ceremonialism, indicating how traditional ways operate in a modern context (p. 25).
