The Curtain within: Haida social and mythical discourse

Abstract
The author examines the fluidity and flexibility of Haida social organization in a post-structural critique of the structural functionalist paradigm that has framed Haida ethnography to date. Based on original fieldwork, and with frequent reference to early studies among the Masset Haida by Swanton and Murdock, topics covered include social values, cosmology, supernatural forces, symbolic property, and feasting as a set of practices and beliefs in which individuals, houses and lineages vie for recognition and prestige.
