The Chipewyan hunting unit

By: Sharp, Henry S..

Abstract
In this paper, Sharp argues that the basic Chipewyan social unit is a restricted cognatic descent group, which he calls a 'hunting unit,' and not a composite band as classified by Steward and Service for Canadian Athapaskans; Nor is it a nuclear family household as argued by Helm. Sharp examines the various factors that influence this structure, including ecology, hunting and trapping patterns, relationship to the land, marriage, postmarital residency, affinal relations, and leadership. Sharp also discusses the relationships between hunting units, and the seasonal aggregation of hunting units.
