Abstract
The Patuanak pilgrimage, one among many annual festivals observed in the Upper Churchill River communities, serves the function of integrating people from an extensive region. Taking as an example the annual pilgrimage to the grave site of the Oblate missionary Father Louis Maraud, the author describes in detail the various social and ritual ramifications of this event and analyzes its role in Patuanak society. Jarvenpa views the pilgrimage as a distinctiive cultural expression "…conjoining features of Athapaskan, Algonquin, and European society in the subarctic political-economic frontier" (p. 177).
