An Athapaskan way of knowing: Chipweyan ontology

American ethnology25 (3) • Published In 1998 • Pages: 412-432

By: Smith, David Merrill.

Abstract
This is a study of Chipewyan ontology and opens with a vivid account of a unusual hunting incident witnessed by the author, in which a coyote appears to display a supernatural intelligence. Smith discusses bush sensibility, attitude towards animals, and belief in a supernatural force, INKONZE, which ties humans and animals together. He compares the above to Western Cartesian way of looking at the world.
