Abstract
This is a traditional ethnography of the Chipewyan Indians through the first quarter of the 20th century. Although heavy emphasis in this work is on material culture, there is also much data on foods and the food quest, relations with other tribes, settlement patterns, geography, social organization, amusements, religious beliefs and mythological tales, and the cultural position of the Chipewyan in reference to Eskimo and other Boreal Woodland societies (discussed in large part in terms of cultural element distributions). The information presented here -- particularly in terms of hunting, fishing, trapping, and clothing and clothing manufacture -- is very detailed.
