Abstract
Ramirez and Del Balzo focus in this study on what they call the 'formative period' (ca. 1900-1921) of Italian immigration to Montreal during which the community was transformed from the status of a 'colony' to a full-blown Little Italy. In this document this transition from sojourning to final settlement is examined in detail. Other major topics discussed in this work are: housing of immigrants (with particular reference to the boarding house), job opportunities in Canada, labor agents, the Italian PROMINENTI or elite, the role of the Immigration Aid Society, internal conflicts, population trends, the Church and its function in social control, and the significance of Italian groceries in the social life of Italian Canadians.
