Abstract
This document serves as an introduction to a series of historical and thematic papers prepared for an international conference held at the Canadian Academic Centre in Rome on the topic 'writing about the Italian immigrant experience in Canada,' (see HRAF documents nos. 9-10, and 18-24 in this file). Since this article is introductory in nature, the subject matter discussed is somewhat general and sometimes theoretical dealing with the Italian immigrant elite, ethnicity, the padrone system, settlements in Canada, the role of the boarding house in immigrant society, and social change particulary in reference to religion, language, womens' status, and the work place.
