Eh, Paesan!: being Italian in Toronto

University of Toronto PressToronto • Published In 1997 • Pages: xii, 209

By: Harney, Nicholas De Maria.

Abstract
This is a study of ethnicity, community, and transnationalism, based on the author's fieldwork among Italian Canadians in Toronto, Canada in 1992-1995. As a basis of understanding the above concepts, Harney presents an analysis of a number of voluntary associations and institutions with particular reference to their role as local sites of cultural production and exchange. These data are used to interpret the constant refashioning of the term 'Italianness' in the society and to understand the overall social construction of an ethnic community. In addition, this document also examines the historical context of the Italian migration to Canada, their settlements in Toronto, the role of giving in the construction of community solidarity, community competition for status and prestige, and the FESTA or religious observances (i.e., ceremonials) as a unifying factor in Italian Canadian ethnicity.
