The Koniags

Holmberg's ethnographic sketches1 • Published In 1985 • Pages: 35-61

By: Holmberg, H. J. (Henrik Johan), Falk, Marvin W., Jaensch, Fritz.

Abstract
This is a traditional ethnographer of the Koniag Eskimo of Kodiak Island based on the author's own observations of the people in the mid-ninetenth century, and supplemented by the the accounts of informants, and information appearing in the diary of Davydov, an earlier explorer to the region. Much of the data refer to the material culture and economics of the Koniag, such as physical appearance, clothing, foods, marine hunting and fishing, and house styles, with some limited information on ceremonial feasts, and early contacts and relations with the Russians. Little if any information is provided on social structure and social organization in this work.
