Abstract
This document is divided into two major parts, the first dealing with Kodiak Island culture history and ethnography from the early prehistoric period to approximately 1989. This section deals with early European contacts, demography, community organization and economy, household organization, kinship and ideology, prior to the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989. The second section of this work discusses the impact of the oil spill on the various social institutions mentioned above, with emphasis on the economic, social, cultural, and psychological affects on the native Koniag Eskimo population.
