An ethnographic sketch of Old Harbor, Kodiak: an Eskimo village

Arctic anthropology6 (2) • Published In 1970 • Pages: 29-42

By: Befu, Harumi.

Abstract
This source is a brief ethnographic sketch of the village of Old Harbor, Kodiak based on less than one month of fieldwork in 1960. The author admits that the data are scanty but since the community was destroyed in 1964 by an earthquake, these are the only ethnographic data available on the village before the earthquake. Befu covers most aspects of life in Old Harbor. Researchers are warned that Befu has a very peculiar concept of what constitutes religion. He says that the Russian Orthodox Church has supplanted the native religion. The only remnants of native 'religion,' according to Befu, are childbirth and menstrual customs (p. 38).
