Field Museum of Natural History70 ; 1281 • Published In 1978 • Pages: xi, 80

By: Nelson, Edward William, VanStone, James W..

Abstract
Following an historical preface, this document provides a naturalist’s notes on a journey through the lower-middle Yukon River region in the winter of 1880, including time spent among the Ingalik and Holikachuk, with some comparable material on surrounding groups. Nearly half the manuscript is transcriptions of myths, complemented by observations of ceremonial activities. Relations with the Eskimo (Yupik) are highlighted, as are adjustments to the fur trade, and major events in the life cycle. Some additional information is provided on environment and subsistence, and on material culture.
