Abstract
This dissertation presents a meticulously detailed study of the history of California's boardinghouses or hotels, known in the Basque language as OSTATUA (sing. OSTATUAK), from the mid nineteenth century to the 1980s. Echeverría outlines the earliest appearances of the OSTATUA, charts their expansion throughout California and the American West, and describes their present state of demise. The role of the OSTATUA within Basque-American culture and a description of how they operated is another important aspect of this dissertation. The author believes, based on the analysis of information from numerous interviews, that the boardinghouse/hotel complex was the most important institution among the Basque-Americans during the peak years of their immigration to the United States (ca. 1890-1940).
