Abstract
This work is an ethnographic study of the Basques in the American West, with particular emphasis on those in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. The focus of the author's research is on the assimilation processes taking place in various areas of Basque society as the result of exposure to the relevant dominant culture of American society. Since Decroos assumes '…that time is a crucial element in the process of integration, exposure is measured in terms of generational sequence ' (p. ix). Other relevant variables used as indices of exposure to American culture are age, sex, and occupation. In addition, attention is also focused in this work on the maintenance of Basque ethnic culture and the consequences this has for the self-identification of its adherents. Other topics given varying degrees of discussion in this document are immigration, the Basque hotel, cultural associations, religion, education, economics, and politics. Appendices A and B describe the author's methodology.
