Abstract
This book, written by a staff writer for the New Yorker Magazine, presents a popularized account of Hasidic life from the standpoint of a Crown Heights Lubavitcher family -- the Konigsbergs (a pseudonymn) -- with whom Harris became closely associated in her field work. Although a good part of the text is presented in question and answer interview style, and frequently reflects family cultural values, nevertheless, there is a wealth of additional information here on the social and religious history of the Hasidim, Sabbath observances, the MIKVAH or ritual baths, religious holidays (e.g., Passover, Purim, Succoth), relations between the Satmar and Lubavitch congregations, education, weddings, and death and birth customs.
