Abstract
The bulk of the information in this study was obtained by the author from personal interviews and the analysis of data obtained from questionnaires administered to Hasidic informants during the period of Kamen's fieldwork (1972-1974) among the Bobover Hasidim of Boro (Borough) Park, Brooklyn, New York. The goal of the research project '…was to describe the organization of the educational system, the major beliefs and assumptions on which it is based, and the way in which it is experienced in the lives of young people passing through it' (p. 6). Although, as indicated above, a large part of this document deals with various aspects of Hasidic education, there is also much data here on religion, marriage, childhood ceremonies (e.g., the first hair cut), adolescence, the emergence of the peer group, and employment opportunities and objectives. In concluding, the author discusses the use of the questionnaire as a research tool (in appendix).
