Abstract
This is a study of how their Italian heritage has affected the lives of suburban Italian-American women, especially the influence of family and kin. When compared to non-Italian women, Italian-American women tend to live closer to kin and their place of birth. They are more likely to be blue-collar workers, work at home, and contribute to the household income. They are less likely to go away for college or attend college at all. When asked directly about the influence of their ethnic background they emphasize the importance of the family in their lives.
