The park and the Italians

social order of the slum : ethnicity and territory in the inner city, by Gerald D. SuttlesChicago • Published In 1968 • Pages: 99-118

By: Suttles, Gerald D..

Abstract
This is a study of the Italian Americans occupying the 'Addams Area' (a pseudonym) in the Near West Side of Chicago. Although there is some data in this paper on the character of the Italian American, on specific individuals representing particular status roles in the society, organized crime, relations with other ethnic groups, world view, and concepts of ethics and ethnicity, the major portion of this work deals with local forms of social organization known as social-athletic clubs (SACs) and street corner groups. These groups, which are age-graded, range from adult to the youngest adolescent clubs. The author discusses the relationship of each club to one another and their relative location in Chicago's Sheridan Park. Suttles also describes a Mexican street corner group located in the park (the Barracuda club), and its relationship to the Italian American groups located there.
