Abstract
This work assesses the effectiveness of Hmong integration into American society by way of the community college, and how the college can help the Hmong in the adjustment process. Values and beliefs are examined in this study in order to determine which assist or hinder the Hmong in the assimilation process. Special attention is also directed to those areas of conflict and tension between Hmong and American students and their instructors. Adapting Friere's theories to his research program Janssens conducted interviews with five Hmong students and five instructors at Merced Community College. Several months later the instructors and Hmong students were given an analysis of the initial findings, and were asked to clarify their original views and suggest ways of resolving the problems identified in the first interview. As a result of this process students gained an insight into thier cultural differences and were made to realize their need to balance adjustment to American society with a continuation of their own Hmong identity. Much of the data in the source are presented in the format of interview questions and answers, and often contain speculative observations.
