From Indians to Chicanos: the dynamics of Mexican-American culture

By: Vigil, James Diego.

Abstract
Vigil has written an undergraduate college text for Chicano studies. He examines four major historical periods, including the Pre-Columbian (pre-1519), Spanish colonial (1521-1821), Mexican nationalism (1821-1846), and the Anglo period (1846-present.) The first five chapters are not indexed as they fall outside the purview of the Chicano cultural file. Begining with chapter six, Vigil discusses the historical events in Northern Mexico, including present-day Texas, New Mexico and California. He looks at each period in the terms of race, class, conflict, and change. In the last period he unpacks the many layers of racism, its relationship to class, and the rise of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s.
