Abstract
This dissertation was written with three basic objectives in mind: (1) to determine the nature and extent of the Mexican-American labor force in San Antonio, Texas; (2) to examine possible causes of ethnic imbalance in employment and income within the area of study; and (3) to evaluate various programs designed to speed up the assimilation of the economically disadvantaged (pp. 1-2). The field research for this study was undertaken in San Antonio during the summers of 1962, 1963 and 1964, and supplemented freely with library sources for historical and cultural background. Some comparable data are also presented on Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Corpus Christi, and El Paso. Additional information deals with various types of industry and manufacturing in the City in which the Mexican-Americans participate as a labor force, education and training, and housing and health relevant to this ethnic group. Frequent references are made in the text to Anglo-Mexican-American relations, particularly in terms of discrimination in labor.
