Abstract
This dissertation examines work and subsistence strategies employed by low income Chicano households in the lower Rio Grande Valley between 1948 and 1983 (p. viii). The subjects it covers are a social and economic history of agriculture in south Texas, labor immigration to the lower Rio Grande Valley, life in the COLONíA, changing patterns of agricultural labor, seasonal household migration, work strategies outside of agriculture, and public and private forms of assistance.
