Abstract
This account of the culture of the Bedouins of Kuwait and Sau'di Arabia was written by H. R. P. Dickson, a man whose career as a British Political Officer in Kuwait from 1929 to 1936 enabled him to make extended observations on the customs of the desert tribes. After describing the environmental setting of the nomadic tribes, Dickson presents basic ethnographic information on their material culture, social system, hospitality patterns, religious beliefs and practices, tales, warfare, animal husbandry, etc. Special chapters are devoted to a discussion of the boat building and pearl diving industries centering in Kuwait. The Muntafiq shepherd tribes are discussed and a description of the various social divisions of the Mutair, 'Ajman, 'Awazim, Rashaida, Shammar, and 'Anizol tribes is included as an appendix to the text. This is the second edition of the book.
