Abstract
In this study examines settlement and marriage patterns, a comparative ethnographic approach is used to posit that a certain percentage of village marriages had to be exogamous. Possible marital connections between archaeological sites are determined according to a formula based on population size. The author suggests that the practice of exogamy gave rise to the formation of clans and tribes.
