Abstract
In 1993, Zenner returned to a community of Syrian Jews he had studied in the early 1960s and discusses the changes that have happened to its members since then. He found that the Syrian Jews have achieved a higher standard of living and have become for the most part assimilated, although they continue to maintain ties to other Syrian Jewish communities in places as far away as Mexico City and New York. He examines changes in residence, households, religious practices, marriage, politics, and attitudes towards other Jews and Palestinians. He noted a revival of interest in their Syrian heritage evident in museum exhibits and fictional and autobiographical literature. He focuses on one synagogue and the rabbis, political parties, and yeshiva associated with it.
