By: Zenner, Walter P..

Abstract
Zenner discusses the migration of Syrian Jews to Israel from the mid-nineteenth century up to the founding of the State of Israel in 1948. Early migrants were mostly rabbinic scholars who came to Jerusalem for sacred study. Their travel did not entail crossing an international border. Under the British-ruled Palestine Mandate, over 9,000 Syrian Jews, mostly Halebim from Aleppo, immigrated. Many of them were working class migrants. Zenner discusses some of the reasons for migrating, where migrants settled, the work they did, their political and religious involvement, and their degree of assimilation. The article includes 20 photos.
