Abstract
During the period of the late 1980s to the mid 1990s, the immigration of Jews from the former Soviet Union into Israel has had a profound impact on Israeli society. The sheer number of Russian immigrants, their diverse occupational qualifications and rich intellectual resources, their rapid integration into every sphere of social activities, their surprising successful political mobilization -- all these have set Israel in a new direction (p. ix). In this work Siegel examines these processes in all their complexity and diversity, combining these data with detailed ethnographic description and insights into Russian immigrant culture.
