Abstract
This study argues that the social setting is a natural unit of social organization which is comprised of dimensions of hierarchy, reciprocity and territoriality. Through focused interaction, these dimensions generate encounters of short duration. Encounters emerge from the organization of the setting, and feed back into it, to replicate and to alter its ongoing structure. Through the analysis of interaction in an Israeli work place for the indigent elderly, four forms of encounter are delineated. The variable appearance of these encounter forms is used to explain the emergence of an alternative, and competing reality of play in the setting. Although they exist through different durations, setting and encounter mutually modify one another; and they demonstrate a pattern of continuous replication and change in microstructural form (back cover).
