Stratification, social control, and capitalism in Iranian villages: before and after land reform

Abstract
In this paper, Keddie examines land tenure, land reform and agricultural production over a hundred-year period from the mid-nineteenth century to 1969. She notes that the living conditions of peasants declined in that period and attributes it to export trade with the West and the privatization of property, which facilitated tax collection, but resulted in the concentration of land ownership. Various land reform initiatives in the 20th century did not go far enough or were never fully implemented. In some cases land reform was undermined by landlords who transfered ownership among family members. Keddie compares the conditions and reforms in different regions and wonders how land reform influences the politicization of the peasantry.
