By: Beck, Lois.

Abstract
In this article, Beck examines the Iranian tribal organization and its historical relationship to the state. She argues that the tribe and state were interdependent and did not function as two separate, opposing systems. Whereas most of the research has focussed on the state's impact on tribes, Beck looks on the influence of tribes on the state. She concludes by listing five patterns of relationships between tribal polities and the Iranian state.
