Abstract
This report on the geography of Iran appears as Chapter XIII of a work on the geography of the Middle East. The entire chapter, including several distributional maps and charts, has been excerpted for the HRAF collection. Following a thorough discussion of the topographic and climatic characteristics of Iran, the author widens his scope to include the economic factors contingent upon the countrys geography. Topics covered are: agriculture (with the various crops, their distribution and importance to the economy), animal husbandry, mineral potential by district, an enumeration of industrial installation (struggling because of general primitiveness of machinery and methods, inadequate utilization of labor, unequal distribution of industry throughout the land, and the inbred preoccupation labor, unequal distribution of industry throughout the land, and the inbred preoccupation with agriculture and pastoralism.) Population figures and distributions are presented, with indications as to the effect of geographic barriers on the government attempts at amalgamation of the diversified tribal groups within Irans borders. Of similar importance is the position of Iran along the trade routes linking east and west. The inability of roads, railways, sea ports and communications in general to cope with the aridity of the climate and the rough terrain has hindered Iran in foreign trade and also in the institution of over-all internal productive stability and efficiency. The Anglo-Iranian Oil Company is cited as a vital factor in augmenting the productive capacity of Iran, despite the geographic and traditional obstacles which belabor the land. The author, a lecturer in the University of Aberdeen, was in the Middle East and southern Europe from 1942-45.
