The Palestinians in Israel: a study in internal colonialism

By: Zureik, Elia.

Abstract
The author's stated main goals in this study is to (1) to fill a gap in the literature on the sociology of the Arabs in Israel, and (2) to delineate the institutional ideological bases which govern the relationship between the subordinate Palestinian Arab minority and the dominant Zionist regime (p. 4). In an attempt to accomplish these goals Zureik presents, as background to the study, a theoretical discussion dealing with pluralism, dependency theory, and internal colonialism, then continues with a discussion of Arab social structure in the pre-1948 period; the place of Israeli writings on the Arab minority in the context of the theoretical perspective discussed; the transformation of Arab class structure in Israel under Israeli colonization (post 1948 period); patterns of prejudice and their consequences for the Arab minority in Israel; the politicization of Israeli Arabs; and trends in Palestinian scholarship.
