Abstract
This is an account of the symbolism surrounding the Palestinian peasant (FALLAHIN), especially since their heroic involvement in the fatal 1936-1939 rebellion. The peasant has become an icon of Palestinian resistance up until the present, witness the wearing of the traditional peasant headscarf (KUFIYA) as part of the uniform of the PLO and FEDAYEEN. Swedenburg examines the history and historiography of the Palestinian peasant, their significant role in the Great Revolt of 1936-1939 and subsequent fate, and reasons for their rebirth as a symbol of Palestinian nationalism.
