Abstract
This is a study of the Palestinian settlement Ein Houd and Israeli settlement Ein Hod, both the same place but with two histories, two sets of memories, one Palestinian Arab and one Jewish Israeli. The original Palestinian village was destroyed between 1948 and 1953, and then resettled as an artists colony by East European Jews lead by the Dada artist, Marcel Janco. The study is based on 'memorial books,' gazetteers of destroyed villages, and interviews of the current residents and the former residents of the village. The latter live in a new settlement nearby and in the Jenin refugee camp in Jordan. Slyomovics discusses Palestinian architecture and how space was used by the Palestinians in the past and the Israeli artist residents today. She also discusses the constraints imposed by the Israeli government on the Palestinian settlement nearby, Ein Houd al-JadĪdah.
