Abstract
In this study Hilterman examines the trade movement and its relationship to the national movement and Intifada (b. 1987). At a time when collective action against Israeli occupation was declared dead, organized labor provided the local institutional infrastructure and the leadership for the uprising. According to Hilterman, the proletarianization of Palestinian society and rise of a new class consciousness translated into a renewed resistance against the occupation. Hilterman documents the organizing efforts in detail, including women's committees and activities, which occurred in the ten-year period prior to the Intifada.
