Abstract
This work is based on field research conducted during the years 1925-1931 in Artās, an Arab village in what was Palestine at that time. The author spent many months solely in Artās experiencing and observing the daily life of the people. Granqvist was interested in studying this little village society with its laws and regulations to understand more fully the life and position of women, the author's main concern. She utilized women as informants and succeeded in compiling much data on marriage conditions, customs, habits, and ways of thinking of the village. Her descriptions and discussions are detailed and thorough. This is volume I of a two volume endeavor. Volume I includes a discussion of the age of marriage, the choice of a bride, and marriage by consideration.
