Abstract
This study of reproductive motivations and family structure among the lower classes aims to highlight attitudes, institutions, and conditions inherent to Jamaican society that could help to constrain the birth rate. Trained personnel interviewed 99 rural and urban women, and 53 of their mates. Although the authors do not give definite recommendations as to how to limit population growth, this study is valuable because it is the first to investigate family structure and reproductive behavior in Jamaica. It is also valuable because it challenges the established views of other social scientists, as well as many popular beliefs.
