Abstract
This article describes the effects on the lives of the inhabitants of the community of Barrio Ingenio of pollution created by the U. S industrial plant, Union Carbide Grafito, Inc., and its relation to health issues of the population. The focus of this study is on the social movements that developed among the residents of the community and workers at the plant in opposition to the plants's operation and on the changing role of women in those movements from important but auxiliary efforts to leadership positions.
