Abstract
This work is an investigative study of wage-labor activities among small-scale fishers in Puerto Rico. The document attempts to clarify the manner in which the incorporation of independent producers (the fishers) into labor and commodity markets affects their economic activities and their sense of self. Issues given special attention in this study are: resource exploitation and marine ecosystems; the allocation of household tasks among fisher families; relations among households; political activity; investment; and the fishers' own conceptions of the relationship between fishing, work, and labor. The authors' methodology included life histories, observation, structured tasks, and secondary source material.
